Russell E. Russ Wells, age 50, of Green Lake, died Sunday, January 3, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer at his home.
He was born March 2, 1948, in Green Lake, a son to Russell L. and Ellen (Dolan) Wells. He graduated from Green Lake High School in 1966, and then attended UW Oshkosh prior to serving his country in Vietnam. Private Wells received the Bronze Star with V Device and the Purple Heart for heroism in ground combat while serving as artillery recorder with Battery A 1st Battalion, 82nd Artillery, for exceptionally valorous actions on 17 November 1968. Even though he sustained severe wounds, his timely and heroic actions contributed greatly to the defense of the battery, and undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, the last 5 years in Oshkosh. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Green Lake Willis-Chapel Legion Post #306, member of National Association of Letter Carriers, and Walleyes for Tomorrow. He was also a field editor for Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota WOODS & WATER Magazine. He had lived in Green Lake most of his life, and was an avid fisherman promoting Catch and Release.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Ailing) whom he married in 1991; son, Dylan Patrick Wells of Boston, MA; his mother, Ellen Wells of Green Lake; sister, Catherine (William) Willmann of Waterford, WI; nephew, John Christopher Manfrin of Chicago; stepchildren, Squire Kershner of Madison and Megan Kershner of Stevens Point; special friends and Oshkosh postal employees and coworkers. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell L. Wells and a sister, Patricia E. Wells.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 6, 1999, from 4 until 7 PM at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon, followed by a Legion Service at 7 PM. Visitation will also be again on Thursday from 10 until 11 AM at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will follow at 11 AM with the Reverend Karen Gygax-Rodriguez officiating. Inurnment will be in Dartford Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established.
