Ruth Westover

August 31, 1909 — October 17, 1995

Ruth Westover, 86, of Waukau, died Friday October 27, 1995 at the Omro Care Center where she has resided for the past 2 years.

Ruth was born August 31, 1909 in Oconomowoc, WI the daughter of Seth and Myrtle Shepard Billings. She attended Blue Bell Rural School and Omro High School going on to Winnebago County Normal for Teacher Training. Ruth worked for the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern from 1946 to 1971 when she retired. She was a Free Lance writer and manager of the Berlin Bureau of Northwestern.

Ruth married Leon B. Westover on October 18, 1927 in Waukegan, IL. They lived in the Waukau area. In 1972 Ruth created the Puchyan Pottery with her daughter Peggy, located in Green Lake until 1983. She also wrote The Historical Pageant for the Waukau Centennial in 1946. Also in her writings were several historical research papers for the Berlin historical Society and she specialized in historical feature for Newspapers. She was the author of “Waukau, A History” in 1979, (a copy of this book is located in the Library of Congress) and Author of Waukau Methodist Church History in 1987.

Ruth was a former Member of the Board of Directors of the Berlin Historical Society, Vice President in 1970. Also a member of the board of Wisconsin State Historical Society and a member of the Rural Rembrandt Art Club of Wautoma. She belonged to the Waukau United Methodist Church and the church Women’s Society. taught Sunday School and was church organist for many years.


Mrs. Westover is survived by 3 daughters, Genevieve (Hugh)Stellmacher of Ripon, Margaret “Peggy” (Ovle Gene) Jones of Green Lake, and Ellen (David) DeMarco of Fond du Lac. One Sister Joyce Morrison of Omro, 11 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Leon and Edward; and one brother.


A memorial service for Ruth Westover will be held Monday, October 30, 1995, at 11:00 am at the Waukau United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 10:00 am to the time of service at the church. The Reverend Jeff Cole will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Waukau Cemetery. A Memorial has been established.
