Shirley J. Hayes, 77, of Hillside Terrace, Ripon, passed away Monday evening, November 7, 2005, at the Markesan Resident Home in Markesan with her children by her side.
She was born October 25, 1928, in Red Wing, MN, the daughter of Clarence and Margaret (Durrenfeld) Swanson. Shirley was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and the UW-Wisconsin at River Falls. On September 2, 1950, she married William F. Hayes in River Falls. Shirley and William raised seven children and resided in Ripon for fifty years. Shirley was devoted to quality education and served three terms on the Ripon School Board. Shirley was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Ripon, League of Women Voters, Ripon Womens Club, Ripon Educational Club, Ripon Historical Society, and Southwoods Park Association. She volunteered as an A.A.U.W. Art Presenter and tutored at St. Patricks School.
Survivors include seven children, Cynthia Diemer (Richard W. Diemer) of Ripon, William F. Hayes, Jr. of Appleton, Mary Hayes (Daniel Hansen) of Milwaukee, Melanie Hayes Sims (Paul Sims) of Madison, Stacie Woboril (Bruce Woboril) of Plover, Sarah Hayes Jewell (Andrew Jewell) of St. Paul, MN, Elizabeth Hayes Wallinga (David Wallinga) of St. Paul, MN, eleven grandchildren, Nathan, Lydia & Madeleine Diemer, Connor, Owen & Regan Sims, Molly, Samuel & Nicholas Woboril, Lucia Wallinga, and William Jewell; brother, Neil Swanson of Billings, MT; and numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William F. Hayes; sister, Gloria Hardie; brother, Jack Swanson; and grandson, Peter Wallinga.
Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley J. Hayes will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2005, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 218 Blossom St, Ripon, with Reverend Robert A. Fictum officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 12 noon until the time of the service. Private interment will be Saturday morning at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Town of Ripon. Memorial gifts will be given to the American Stroke Association in her name.
