Thomas Kimen Jr.

GREEN LAKE – Thomas W. Kimen Jr., age 73, of Green Lake and Key Biscayne, FL died September 14, 2009 in Green Lake.
Tom was born in Highland Park, MI, eldest child of Aira (Maki) and Thomas Kimen. Siblings who survive him are: Karen of San Francisco, CA, Joanne Kroll of Chandler, AZ, Michael of Apollo Beach, FL, and Peggy Padgett of Algonquin, IL.
Tom graduated from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL in 1954. Tom completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Tom went on to earn his MBA at the University of Michigan in 1959. Tom loved to remind all that he graduated on a Sunday and went to work on Monday for the Northern Trust Company in Chicago, where he spent his entire 36 year working career. In 1972, Northern Trust acquired Security Trust Company of Miami, FL. Tom spent ten years as president of the Miami operation and functioned as chairman of all Northern Trust Banks of Florida that opened during those years. In 1982, Tom was transferred back to Chicago to work in the Corporate Trust Division. While there, he was instrumental in bringing corporate trust services to high net worth families, creating a division now known as Wealth Management. Tom retired in 1995.
Tom met a Northern Trust co-worker, Gail Carmichael, in 1961 and they married a year later. Two children, the lights of his life, were born and survive: Thomas Kimen III (Karen Murray) of Miami and Amy McLean Kimen of Chicago.
Since Tom’s retirement in 1995, summers have been spent in Green Lake, and winters in Key Biscayne, FL. In addition to Tom’s career at the bank, he was always involved in a variety of civic and community organizations. In the Green Lake area, Tom served for many years as a Trustee of Ripon College. He was a founder and the first president of the Green Lake Conservancy Foundation.
Memorial tributes are very, very optional but would be welcomed at either of those organizations, both of which were close to Tom’s heart.
Tom knew no stranger and had a zest for life that seems to be the backbone of what folks remember most about him. He will be long remembered by friends and family for his spirit of youthfulness and fun. That would please him a lot.
Tom’s family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care that Tom received from very special caregivers in his final months at Kindred Hearts of Green Lake. And thanks are in order as well to the many friends who so kindly stopped by or sent their wishes during those months. A tribute to Tom will be held in Green Lake in the spring. Friends who care to join our family at home at that time will be welcome.

Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon, is assisting the family.
