Victoria Hargrave

August 22, 1913 — September 26, 2008

Victoria Elizabeth Hargrave, age 95, passed away on September 26, 2008, at The Allegro at College Harbor located in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Vicky was born on August 22, 1913, in Ripon, the daughter of Alexander Walter and Estelle Winifred Hargrave. She graduated from Ripon High School in 1929; Ripon College in 1934 (B.A. - Magna Cum Laude); The Library School Program of The University of Wisconsin in 1938 (One Year Certificate - with distinction), and The University of Chicago in 1947 (M.A.) Vicky was a teacher at Brandon High School, 1934-37; an extension librarian at the Iowa State College Library, 1938-44; the librarian at Ripon College, 1944-46, and the librarian at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois, 1947-78, where she served for 31 years attaining the academic rank of full professor. She was a member of the American Library Association and the American Association of University Women. A supportive daughter, sister, cousin, aunt and friend, Vicky’s honest, steadfast, and loving kindness set the standard for service and excellence. She was our “book aunt”. On Christmas and birthdays, successive generations grew up knowing with complete certainty that new and exciting books were about to appear. Vicky did not forget birthdays. She frequently traveled to be with us on holidays and special occasions. Vicky loved us and we knew it.

Survivors include one brother, David R. (Helen) Hargrave of Santa Rosa, CA; many loving cousins, particularly Elsie H. (Jimmy) Sakiotis of St. Petersburg, FL; five nephews, A. Douglas (Shar) Hargrave of Charlottesville, VA; John W. (Libby) Hargrave of Pensacola, FL; Dean R. (Marlene) Duman of Flower Mound, TX; Richard L. Hargrave of Merrill, WI; Alexander W. Hargrave (Catherine) of Larkspur, CA; two nieces, Ann H. (Chuck) Schob of Fond-du-Lac, WI; Mary H. (Mark) Cravens of Palo Alto, CA; three great-nephews, Christopher R. Hargrave of Palm Court, FL; Steven C. Schob of Kansas City, MO; Alexander S. Hargrave of Charlottesville, VA; seven great-nieces, Jennifer H. (Chris) Geric of Ponte Vedra, FL; Kristen H. Hargrave of Boston, MA; Rebecca A. Schob of Cincinnati, OH; Midori H. (Scott) Rome of Arlington, VA; Claudia H. Cravens of Brooklyn, NY; Helen K. Cravens of Palo Alto, CA; Jessica B. Hargrave of Merrill, WI; two great-great nieces, Ella C. Geric of Ponte Vedra, FL; Audrey A. Geric of Ponte Vedra, FL.. Vicky was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Constance; three brothers, Walter J.; Douglas C.; Alan D. and one great-niece, Jessica H. Duman.

A graveside inurnment ceremony will take place at Hillside Cemetery on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 10:30. Following inurnment, a memorial service celebrating Vicky’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. at First Congregational Church, 220 Ransom Street in Ripon 54971.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Vicky’s name may be made to The Ripon Historical Society. Donations should be mailed to: Treasurer, Ripon Historical Society, PO Box 274, Ripon, WI 54971.
