Virginia Dunn Kraut, age 90, of Denver, CO, formerly of Green Lake, WI, died August 28, 2005 in Colorado.
She was born May 30, 1915, in Donnellson, IL, the daughter of William Ferris and Hattie (Mansfield) Dunn who had moved to Colorado in 1924. She graduated from East Denver High School in 1932, and attended the Universities of Denver and Colorado. She was a well known tennis player in the 1930s winning numerous titles including state titles in 3 states. In later years she played in national senior tournaments, winning a number of national titles including 2 Gold Balls. As of this year, she was placed in the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame. In 1939, Virginia married Lathan Smith and has 4 surviving daughters: Cheryl Jakobsson and Wendy Cody of Boulder, CO, Jill Smith of Denver, CO, and Muffet Hayes of Sanibel Island, FL, 2 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Following a divorce in 1959, she remarried in 1963 to Ralph J. Kraut of Fond du Lac, a prominent industrial leader in Wisconsin. He died in 1985, and Virginia returned to Colorado in 1993, living in Colorado Springs for 6 years. There she was a member of the Garden of the Gods Club, the B.O. Chapter of PED, the Zobulon Pike Chapter of the DAR, and the Colorado Springs Symphony Guild. In 1999 Virginia returned to Denver.
Virginia Dunn Kraut will be buried alongside her husband, Ralph J. Kraut in Green Lake, WI where she had lived for 30 years.
Graveside services will be held Friday, September 9, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the Dartford Cemetery, Green Lake with the Rev. Karen Gygax-Rodriguez officiating.
