Wilbert “Jack” Gatzke, age 91, of Ripon, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008, at Ripon Medical Center.

Jack was born on February 24, 1916, in Ripon, the son of Leo and Martha (Klemp) Gatzke. He graduated from Ripon High School, and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. Jack served a term in the Philippines as a Military Policeman during WWII. He received several military honors including the Army Good Conduct medal before his honorable discharge in 1945. Jack then returned to Ripon where he built his own home on Locust Street. In 1947, he married Grace Hilsberg. She preceded him in death in 1971. On July 28, 1973, Jack married Agnes Hein-Bier. Together, they worked at Ripon Foods until Jack retired in 1981 after 46 years on the job. Retirement allowed Jack and Aggie to pursue the hobbies that they both enjoyed such as fishing, hunting, traveling to Canada, dancing, and bowling. Jack’s devoted love for his grandchildren was well known. He helped to raise his grandchildren and pass on the morals that he himself had learned and was well respected for. The “Jackson League” at Plaza Bowl in Ripon still remains actively named in Jack’s honor. He was a member of V.F.W. post #5278. Jack was also a member of Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Gatzke of Ripon; son, Dewey Bier (special friend, Kris) of Pickett; granddaughter, Heather (Josh) Delforge of Freedom, WI; and grandson, 1LT Joel Bier, stationed in Korea with the U.S. Air Force. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace; brothers, Carl and Earl Gatzke; and sisters, Irene Mueller, Hazel Meyer, and Marion Berndt.

Visitation for Wilbert “Jack” Gatzke will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon.

Funeral service for Wilbert “Jack” Gatzke will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home with Reverend Gerald Schrankler officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Ripon. A memorial has been established.
