William Gehri

March 22, 1919 — April 21, 2003

William E. Gehri, age 84, of Ripon, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Parkview Care Center where he had been since April 2002.

He was born in Tacoma, WA on March 22, 1919, to Eric F. and Margaret (Schwiesow) Gehri. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma. He married Marion L. Mathwig of Ripon in Tacoma on July 14, 1940. They were members of the First Congregational Church of Ripon since 1941.

In Ripon Bill was first employed by Van Metre, Inc. and the Ripon Knitting Works, before being employed by Rockwell International of Oshkosh. He retired from Rockwell September of 1979, after 27 years and last served there as a machinist superintendent. He also retired from the Dept. of Military Affairs as maintenance supervisor at the Ripon National Guard Armory after 33 years of service. During World War II he served in the United States Army in the South Pacific for 2 years. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a Tech. Sgt. He was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5278 of Ripon.

Together with his wife, they jointly served the Boy Scouting program for 15 years. Bill was the Cub Master and Scout Master of the Rotary-Kiwanis sponsored Pack #35 and Troop #35. In later years they spent their leisure time bowling in leagues and downhill skiing and golfing.

Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; 3 brothers; and 3 nephews, all of Washington. He is survived by his wife, Marion; and 2 sons, Bruce W. (Paula) R.N. of Warwick, RI and Col. Mark J. D. (Vickie) of the U.S. Air Force (30 years), presently serving with the USAF-ROTC at Notre Dame University, South Bend, IN. He is also survived by 2 grandsons, David of Sacramento, CA and Christopher in college in Oklahoma. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews in California, Washington and Texas; 2 sisters-in-law, Mary O. Gehri of Boise, ID and Ruth Gehri of Spanaway, Washington; and a cousin in Oregon.

According to his wishes, cremation will follow with no visitation or funeral. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5278 of Ripon.
