William John Martz, age 76, of 618 Sunset Circle, Ripon, passed away Monday evening, October 17, 2005, at Fountain View Care Center in Ripon.
He was born December 5, 1928, in Yonkers, New York, a son to Maurice and Hazel (Bannon) Martz. He received a BA from Rochester University, MA from Northwestern University and a PhD from Yale University. Until his retirement, Dr. Martz had been Professor of English at Ripon College for 43 years, where he taught literature and Shakespeare. William wrote and edited sixteen books, including Beginnings in Poetry and the Distinguished Voice. On June 20, 1953, he married Nedra Linville in Kansas City, MO.
Survivors include his wife, Nedra of Ripon; one son, Bill C. (Gigi) Martz of Mill Valley, CA; three grandsons, William, Sean & Justin of Mill Valley; one sister, Dorothy Tocco of Southbury, CT; sisters-in-law, Maebell Wood of Kansas City, MO and Chris (Bill) Phillips of Palos Verdes, CA; and brother-in-law, Mal Linville of Kansas City, MO. Dr. Martz was preceded in death by his parents, brother Carl, and son Bruce.
Friends may call Friday, October 21, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. A private family service will be held with Rev. Jack W. Kraaz of the First Congregational Church of Ripon officiating. Interment will be in Garden of the Cross Cemetery, Ripon. Memorial gifts may be given to Ripon College for the William Martz Professorship.
